Reading Highlights of 2025
In past years I diligently tracked the books I read on Goodreads. I set a goal of reading ~30 books a year with the aim to establish reading as a daily habit and used Goodreads to track my progress.
This year I realized I haven't updated Goodreads in months—and ironically, I've been reading more than ever. Without fixating on 'books read' as a metric, I can read purely for enjoyment. If I'm not enjoying a book, I can simply stop, rather than slogging through it just to boost my count (a classic sunk cost fallacy).
One of my unexpected favourites this year has been The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs. Like a lot of young children I had an obsession with dinosaurs and paleontology, so reading about someone with so much passion for the subject rekindled a lot of cherished childhood memories.
This year I've been reading a lot of Warhammer 40,000 Black Library novels. I finally managed to complete the monster (54-book long) Horus Heresy series. I'll likely take a break before resuming with the followup Siege_of_Terra series.
Unfortunately while seems like the overall quality of the series drops off towards the end, Wolfsbane and The Buried Dagger still managed to stand out as decent reads towards the end. My personal favourite book of the series remains Know No Fear
Despite completing the Horus Heresy series my favourite Black library publication of this year was the standalone Dropsite Massacre novel which revisits one of the biggest events of the Horus Heresy novels
